With reference to Your æsellency's despatch No. 327 of the 23rd June last, I tranmit to you, herewith,

copy of a letter which is being addressed to the Colonial

office regarding the trans-shipment of opium destined for

Formosa at Hongkong and Singapore,

In paragraph 5 of your despatch under reference

it is stated that "there seems to be little or no direct

evidence that opium is being smuggled into China from

Jemosa on a large scale" and that "the report received

by His Majesty's Minister at Peking from Xia Majesty's

Consul at Amey in a despatch dated March 19th

report referred to it is stated that "the smuggling of

opium and other saree ties from Formona into this district

has remained fairly constant during the last two years,

not showing any particular tendency to increase or te

instructed to furnish a report on this particular aspect

of the case as it is desirable to knew the facts with
